Public relations can support AI visibility by helping businesses earn credible mentions, demonstrate expertise, and establish a consistent public presence across relevant third-party sources.
AI is changing how people discover businesses. But showing up in an AI-generated answer and being trusted enough to earn someone’s business are two different things.
For years, we’ve encouraged companies to think beyond their websites when it comes to building their reputations. What are customers hearing about you? Who recognizes your expertise? Are you participating in the conversations that matter to your industry?
Those questions haven’t gone away. If anything, they’re becoming more relevant as buyers use AI tools alongside traditional search, referrals, and their own research.
And for companies doing complex, highly specialized work, there’s an additional challenge: helping people understand what makes you different in the first place.
Four perspectives on AI visibility
On Tuesday, November 17, I’ll join three fellow marketing and communications specialists for The AI Visibility Playbook: 4 Experts, 4 Strategies, One Goal, a virtual panel exploring different ways businesses can strengthen their visibility.
We’ll bring four perspectives to the conversation:
Cassie Egli: AI visibility
Scott Voelker: YouTube
Dustin Riechmann: Podcast guesting
Lauren Kwedar Cockerell: Public relations
I’ll be talking about PR’s role in building credibility through earned media, thought leadership, and strategic storytelling.
While the technology is changing, the fundamental challenge remains familiar: people need to know who you are, understand what you do, and have a reason to trust you.
Why PR belongs in the conversation
Good PR has never been about collecting press clippings for the sake of collecting press clippings. It’s about building a reputation that helps your business achieve its goals. That might mean sharing your expertise with a trade publication, contributing to a conversation about your industry’s future, or helping customers understand the people and thinking behind your work.
These activities can create useful, independent sources of information about your company beyond the content you publish yourself. As AI-assisted research becomes part of how buyers evaluate businesses, having a clear, credible presence across relevant channels is worth paying attention to.
Does that mean a single media placement will guarantee your company appears in ChatGPT or another AI tool? Of course not. AI systems use different sources and retrieval methods, and their answers can change.
But it does reinforce something we’ve believed for a long time: your reputation is bigger than your website, and your visibility strategy should be, too.
